description: Yesterday my wife and I travelled to PTC Sydney for Tenacity 2016! My first Powerlifting Meet. I have been on this path for seven years but never really considered a competition until late last year when I started comparing my lifts to others and realizing that I could make the cut! After my decision was made I started preparing for the meet. To be honest it was all I thought about.
Soon it was the night before the meet, I could feel the nerves rising and questions starting - “What if I get red lighted on everything?” “What if I haven’t trained hard enough?” and to make things worse I had a f&#king virus! I was feeling sluggish and pumping vitamins, supplements, vegetables and loads of fruit trying to shake it! I woke up in the morning feeling even worse! I remember my wife knocking on the bathroom door asking if I was okay after coughing my guts up. It was this moment I had to choose - make the most of it and compete the best I can or lay in bed sick with regrets. So I loaded up on food, caffeine and water and thought, “I am going to war.”
After arriving at PTC Sydney I met up with some friends that were also competing. We got ready and warmed up. One thing I have to say is warming up and not overdoing it (or underdoing it) is almost impossible! You might train in almost perfect conditions at YOUR gym but when it comes to a meet … shoving 60 big people in one industrial unit doesn’t give you much room, plus queues for bars and equipment with that rapid countdown til your up on the podium had me thinking “oh man you better warm up quick!”
After a rushed warm up I heard my name being called for the platform. I was opening with a 220kg squat. Here it is, after all this training my time had come! I was feeling nervous, like I was about to give a big speech. I got under the bar nice and tight, lifted off, took my breath in and before I knew it I was down and up with ease. I started feeling confident for 230kgs, which I got, followed by 240kgs.
I won’t go on to talk about the other lifts but rather offer advice for on the day from mistakes!
Don’t go crazy on caffeine too early. You’re better off using ammonia smelling caps/bottles on your early lifts. Or you are going to have to pee a thousand times before your first lift (nerves are odd, aren’t they?)
Try and give yourself 20 minutes solid to warm up and if you plan on stretching make that an additional 10 minutes on top. You can achieve this by watching the flight numbers ahead of you and working out a timing system based of that. If you are in the first flight, GET MOVING!
Keep an eye on the board and try to listen out best you can for your name. You want to be at the edge of the podium watching the people lift before you, feeling ready, rather than running through everybody to the podium as your name is being called, and lifting when you’re not mentally prepared.
Watch your numbers in your flight. If you have finished your opening lift, it doesn’t mean you going to be at the same spot you were before in the queue. If the person before you selects a higher weight than you for the second round you will lift before them in the second round. (I was super confused why I had changed position in the queue!)
Prep meals beforehand! Between being sick and coming to PTC Sydney the day before for weigh in, I had no time to prepare meals so I was relying on what I could buy. Try to eat just after your third attempt each time, so you have plenty of time to digest before your first attempt at the next lift.
Pay attention to the instructions and to the calls! I watched some amazing lifts that weren’t counted because the lifter didn’t follow all the rules. You don’t want to get red lighted just because you squatted before the call or let go of the bar too early in a deadlift. If you’re confused just watch the people before you in their lifts or seek guidance.
You’ll meet plenty of people with common interests and goals – make friends, take photos, film your lifts and overall just have fun. Although they’re competing against you, it’s great to support the other lifters because without that support and love of the sport, the event wouldn’t happen in the first place! Be part of the crowd and cheer and yell for the other lifters – when you’re up there lifting, the volume of the crowd yelling “UP, UP” and “YOU CAN DO IT” might be the push you need.
Here’s a video below of my lifts from the day (the first squat didn’t get filmed – my wife’s still getting used to the GoPro!). I squatted 220, 230 and 240, benched 140, 150, 160 (fail), and deadlifted 220, 230 and 235. I was proud to take out the second-biggest total of the day at 625kg. Can’t wait for the next one!
